Deadly Tsunami in Maui

It’s Sunday morning in Maui. On Friday we met James (the guy from Seattle mentioned in a previous post) and some guys down at the park in Kihei. Left around 9:30 at night to drive back and heard on the radio that due to the earthquake in Chile there was a tsunami warning issued in the state of Hawaii. Saturday morning my parents and I woke up to go on a raft/snorkel tour at 5:30am. As we got in the car and began to drive I got a call from my HR manager saying I was not to leave the resort because there was officially a tsunami coming. As she said this we heard alarms sound in town and started to panic a little bit. So we came back to the room and watched the news for a while and started to get nervous - the newscaster said not to panic, but that a deadly tsunami in Hawaii was actually way overdue.

We wanted to run and get to higher grounds, people were getting evacuated from all over the place. It was really panicky and everyone was getting a bit nuts. We decided to come back to the resort and help out with the evacuation process. We evacuated the first and second floors of the hotel and moved everyone to our Ballroom on the 3rd floor. I helped prepare and move food to the ballroom in attempts to feed all the guests. It was super busy for a while and we were all scared for what was supposed to come at 11:19am.

We all got to high points in the hotel to see the tsunami come and be safe. We waited until 1:30pm and nothing ever came. I guess it was called off due to technical difficulties. All that work for nothing. All that panic for nothing. Good grief.
